What You Need to Know
Let me begin with a sobering statistic. 14 million Americans have it, mostly women, and the number is on the rise. What Is It? Hashimoto’s is an autoimmune thyroid condition. The most common initial symptoms include: fatigue, weight gain, pale or puffy face, feeling cold, joint and muscle pain, constipation, dry and thinning hair, heavy menstrual flow or irregular periods, depression, panic disorder, a slowed heart rate, and problems getting pregnant or maintaining pregnancy. Causes The causes are varied and mostly undetermined but one thing is sure — Hashimoto’s often comes about as a consequence of extreme stress and the factors that lead to it are cumulative — also environmental, pollution related, toxicity laden, and yes, genetic. What Can You Do About It? Here are the top 5 Natural Medicine recommendations: 1. Address your traumas. Hashimoto’s is definitively linked to stress. Chakra Medicine asks that you meditate on your communication center. Do you feel like your voice is not being heard at home or at work? Do you feel disenfranchised or frustrated? Depict your stresses and transform them. Define your angst, assign a pictogram to it, and burn it over your sink. Please don’t set your house on fire. Write, create, and speak your mind. Yell if you have to. Think about it and resolve it in your mind. Give thanks as if it has already happened. 2. Follow this protocol. View your body as an interconnected system, and start re-balancing beginning with the GI tract. Consult your physician if you can follow 1) this GI regimen for 3 months, then lysosomal glutathion and milk thistle for 3 months and then this detox bundle for 6 months. This is a standard naturopathic order of operations. We begin with the stomach, move on to liver and kidneys, then we address the heavy metal burden in our bodies. Not sure you need the heavy metal detox? Take this at-home test to see if you do. No lab visit required. 3. Adopt a Mediterranean diet. Give your immune system the boost it needs by stepping away from refined sugars, and most animal products. Free up energy for self-healing and repair. Consume whole foods: fruits, vegetables, yogurt, feta, whole grains, some fish, and olive oil. Eliminate or allow small amounts of dairy, eggs, and fish once per week and meat once every two weeks. In addition, and with your doctor’s approval, add this supplement to your routine. It contains Ashwagandha, Copper, Iodine, Selenium, Tyrosine, Vitamin B, Vitamin C, Vitamin E, and Zinc. It is formulated to support T4 levels and peripheral conversion of T4 to T3. 4. Exercise every day. Start your morning with jumping jacks, yoga or a brisk, 10-minute jog in place. Follow with a plow yoga pose that you can hold in place for 3 minutes: all of these things have been proven to aid your thyroid. 5. Detox. Rid your house of chemical agents such as floor cleaners, fabric softness, bleach, and ammonia. Opt for natural ingredients and essential oils instead. Cook in glass, cast iron, or stainless steal only. Discard your microwave. Sweat and soak your feet in warm water with Epsom salt at least twice a week. Stop using nail polish, deodorant, and synthetic perfumes. Your system’s response is particularly taxing on your thyroid. The science behind these recommendations is vast and deep. Entire books can be written on each of these recommendations. Feel free to expand your research if you need stronger conviction. Back each data point with peer-reviewed independent research.
